Schooling in South Korea
We were coming back from Seoul today at about 10.24pm,I saw some high school students coming back still in their school uniform. They were coming back from school, these kids leave their parents houses by 9.00am in the morning to school. They spend about 13 hours in school everyday except on Saturdays when they finish by 12noon,yes they go to school on Saturdays too.If i am to be in a position to change anything in south Korea it will be their educational system.I don’t really understand why the teachers don’t teach them in English, fine we all agree that they are trying so hard to preserve their language but why spend all that money going to an academy to learn English after school? The English academy taught by foreigners, who didn’t qualify as English teachers. The hours spent in learning in this country is very alarming these kids need some rest too,i don’t think they are ready for the English language yet. There was a time that I was tutoring some kids,i did it for free i noticed that even their parents want to dictate when an assignment should be given to them. They only like to read a book without practicing it,you need to hear a korean child read an English book.A child might have 100% in an English examination in school but can not discuss in basic English. The new president has announced that the English language is going to be compulsory in the year 2010. All the housewives have started going to their libarary for free English lessons,my baby sitter is one of them. She annoys me with her piece of paper that she carries about in the name of studing English, you need to see her every morning holding that paper believe me she is quite a sight. There is no way you can succeed in something that you don’t have fun doing.

it will take time.
from here i can only wish them
the best…
you know in the face of so much
whipped up nationalistic sentiments
many things are being missed by some
nationalities. here they some form of
national reorientation in term of acquiring
a new language by all means is knocking
on their door…
and you can expect the usual language blunder
that will folow the english language being made
compulsory and everyone trying to speak it…
let who can speak, speak well!
or, keep quiet still!

All they need to do is practice, but the shy away from making any attempt in speaking the language.
can there be some strong reasons for that?
you know it’s hard to break old habits…

The only reason i have noticed so far is that they believe so much in just passing the written exams, mind you every subject here is taught in Korean language,at home they speak the same they only use English when they go for the language classes in the evenings.Ragardless of this;they are very good at their chosen professions.
from all this…they can achieve proficiency
in the language if they put their heart and mind
to it.
when they are ready and willing, they shall get it
right.
