What Does Barack Obama’s Presidency mean for Internet Marketers?

Obama Listens

When it comes to Barack Obama’s new economic plan, there are positive and negative aspects. Some parts the plan should help us out as internet marketers. There are other parts that might hurt us. First, let’s start with the best news…we internet marketers are a resourceful bunch and we’ll probably make sure that everything goes well for our future no matter what.

That reminds me…before I go on, I will stick my opinion where it may or may not belong. Both candidates said “The American people are innocent victims of this financial disaster”…um, are you kidding me? I can’t think of a more dangerous thing to say. No one had guns to their heads when they signed those home loans! When American citizens completely stop taking responsibility for their own actions, as the candidates encouraged, then America loses its advantage as the superpower in the world. I know they were trying to win votes, but that’s just irresponsible.

My audience—internet marketers and entrepreneurs—will take care of themselves. They don’t WANT the government to take care of them. That’s how it should be and it’s that very attitude that makes them successful and independent to begin with. If everyone thought like and entrepreneur, we, er, the country wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place.

Okay, back to economic policy. The most exciting thing for internet marketers in Obama’s new economic plan is the deployment of what politicians are calling Next-Generation Broadband. With this plan, Obama wants to bring broadband to every community in America. Overall, this should eventually bring the costs of broadband internet down across the nation. Also, the internet users that are still on dial-up will likely switch over to faster internet, meaning more chances for them to stay on your site instead of clicking away because your graphics are taking too long to load. Flash sites tend to do this a lot. Overall, with this plan implemented, more of America should spend even more time online, meaning more chances for you to make a sale. (more…)

How Do I Determine What to Charge for My Services?

This is the most asked question people have when starting a service business. Pricing is always a tricky art. It requires research and experimentation. The wrong price could drive your customers away, or it could even break your bank. The right price could draw a ton of money and make some you very happy clients.

My own rates vary depending on the type of service I’m supplying, the location my customer lives in and the size of my customer’s business. My price always increases as my knowledge increases.

Some of my services are in high demand, so I can charge more. Some of my other services I am one in many that customers can choose from, so my rate needs to be more competitive. If I work for a larger company, they tend to be able to afford more. Individuals have smaller budgets.

What you charge is dependent on the market, as well as your own unique marketing and business angles. The best way to determine what price is right for your business is to do some research. The following suggestions should help you with your research:

1. How much is your service worth to your client?

Ask around. Ask your customers what they would be willing to pay for a particular service. Just come right out and ask or conduct a survey. Ask other businesses what they are charging for their services. Call and pretend to be a potential client. Find out how much they would charge you. Look for articles and forums in your field where you can ask other consultants what they are charging. Many will just come out and tell you or give you a price range. (more…)

Internet Usage in China

c’mon, get me if you can…♫ a praying mantis from bali ♫

With internet access and usage in China growing at unprecedented rates, there are so many opportunities for internet marketers to make some serious money from this market.

China has become the number one user of the internet in the whole world - with 253 million internet users. The number of users has increased by a whopping 56% in the year to June 2008, with 43 million of these users coming online in just the December to June period.

But what is truly mind-boggling is that these numbers reflect a very low penetration rate of 19.1% - meaning that only this percentage of the country can access the world wide web. Imagine the numbers if China could reach the 71% penetration of Korea or the 68% of Japan. In order to do the math you need to realize that the current population of China is estimated at 1.325 BILLION people.

Realistically though, in a country as vast as China, it may be a very long time, if at all, before the whole population will have internet access, but certainly the major centers are well serviced.

Who is online?

Females account for just over 46% of users. The age group for internet users is young, in fact over 68% of Chinese internet users are under 30 years of age. Around 39% of these have education to high school only, a reflection of the educational makeup of the Chinese population. 30% of internet users are students and a little over 25% are business employees.

What Are the Qualities of a Top Affiliate Program?

Affiliate programs offer merchants the opportunity to employ vast armies of people as their affiliates who only be paid for the results they achieve. On the other hand, the rewards for affiliates are also high. Skilled affiliate marketer can earn many thousands of dollars a month. This win-win situation has led to an explosion in the number of affiliate programs that are available to the would-be marketer. With this proliferation of opportunities has come the question: what qualities should you look for in a top affiliate program that will give you a good chance to make sustainable income?

Below are some tips that will help you to evaluate merchants and their programs to help you to avoid wasting time and money.

1. Does it have high commission rate?

It is very important that you know how much you can expect to earn from a sale. There is no point in spending time and money promoting a product that does not pay well. You could end up spending more on marketing than you are likely to make on sales.

It is probably best to stick with marketing products with a high commission value, unless you have found a niche market where you can sell vast quantities of product, and make substantial commissions on your volume of sales.

2. Does the program have high traffic?

Discover the amount of traffic the merchant’s website is already receiving. Alexa.com could be a useful tool for doing this research. If the website is ranked in the top 100,000, the merchant is getting a good volume of traffic, and there may already be too many affiliates. If it is below 500.000, it is either no good or it could just be a great opportunity to make some good income.

It is always wise to do some more research on the program if their website has a low traffic ranking. You should visit forums to find out if there are any adverse comments about the program. It will be a good idea to buy the product yourself if you can afford to. (more…)
